It can be hard to trust in a world that is superficial, unauthentic, and uncertain most of the time. We have become conditioned to not allow trust to flow out of us. We have to do everything ourselves. We have to build our own lives. We have to make sure that we are in control, not others or anything else, but us. We don’t need trust because we have ourselves.

To be a Christian requires trust though. The definition of trust is a firm belief in the reliability, ability, truth, or strength of someone or something. The word “trust” is said over 130 times in the entire Bible. A word repeated that many times in the Bible must have some significance for our lives. As believers in Christ, trust is just another word for faith. We are called to have faith. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” We are called to have faith in Him, because He has our best interest in mind and His love will never let us go, but guide us through uncertainty and heartache. “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You” (Psalm 56:3).

Learning how to trust takes time. It takes waking up every day and realizing that we ultimately have no control over anything or anyone. We have to let go, give up our false ideas of security and control and look to the One who holds everything together. Who is full of love for us, that we can trust Him. We can put our faith in Him. He is bigger than our doubts, than our fears, than ourselves. Through this daily process of letting go, we begin to trust Him with more and more. However, this process only works if we firmly believe that He is sovereign and worth putting our trust in. If we don’t have this belief, then the letting go and trust means absolutely nothing.

The Bible says in Romans 15:13 that when our trust is in Him, hope overflows in our lives (paraphrased). Trust allows us to have hope, which in turn, points our lives back to Him who our trust is in. Trust helps our lives to flourish and make an impact around us. With our trust in Him, we know He will give us hope and guide us in this uncertain world.
